How well do politicians know the electorate? Think tank Demos has published a report that tries to take the pulse of people in England, by paying particular attention to white voters over 50’s in areas that have undergone the most significant cultural and economic dislocation in recent decades. John Sweeney went to Canvey Island to ask the views of residents, while Emily Maitlis discusses the report findings with Sophie Gaston, acting director of think tank Demos, along with Danny Lockwood, publisher of West Yorkshire’s The Press newspaper and Areeq Chowdhury, chief executive of WebRoots Democracy, a digital democracy organisation.Newsnight is the BBC's flagship news and current affairs TV programme - with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.
